Elephants are largest mammal animals and still found on this earth. They have heavy grey body and are four legs animals. They have to eat lot of food for their heavy body structure. They spend most of their time in eating. They have to consume 330-375 pounds food per day. Basically two species are found in the earth now-a-days that are:

  • African elephants
  • Asian elephants

Asian elephants are also knows an Indian elephants because they mostly live in the wild areas of India. Basically elephants are herbivore mammals and their diet consists of grass, leaves, vegetables, twigs, roots and some fruits and flowers. The interesting fact about elephants is that they can digest just 4% of food they eat in a whole day. Elephants eat almost 149 to 169 kg vegetation food in a day.



Tree barks are one of favorite food sources of elephants. This food contains calcium and roughage and help elephants digest their food. They use their long trunk to cut barks of trees and eat them. Elephants need to drink 18-26 gallons water daily but they consume up to 14 gallons. A male elephant can drink up to 212 gallons of water within just five minutes. When they drink water they use their trunks to spray water on their mouths. Often elephants seen to dug the soil for getting minerals and salt. When elephants dug the earth to get nutrition, there are seen many feet deep holes in the ground.

Elephants digesting system takes 22 hours to digest the food eaten. Elephants chew food and then swallow it. If we compare the activities of elephants with their eating habits, they keep playing with mud and water. They have weak eyesight and use their large ears to recognize the things around.
